Treating Migraine Headaches with Chiropractic Care
Headache disorders are one of the most common disorders of the nervous system, migraine headaches being one type that many experience. They can arise from misalignments in the spine. These subluxations cause tension and a disconnect within your nervous system.
If you are experiencing migraine headaches, chiropractic adjustments can provide relief. In fact, several studies show that it can be more beneficial than over the counter and prescription medication. How? Well, adjustments realign the spine and remove the interference. They address the problem rather than the symptom, keeping headaches away longer, and often permanently. That is why Chiropractic Care is an excellent option for treating migraine headaches quickly and effectively.
Are Migraine Headaches Common?
Most think that migraine headaches are normal because, on average, many people experience them at least once or twice a week. Unfortunately, nearly everyone has experienced a headache at least once in their life. In fact, approximately one out of seven people experience them regularly. That includes the entire world…not just the U.S.
What people should know is that headaches are NOT normal. They can be extremely painful, and sometimes, even disabling. Even worse, certain types of headaches can be a sign of something more serious going on within the body.
Migraine headaches are a type of primary headache. Primary headaches are defined as a dysfunction, discomfort, or over-use of pain-sensitive features in or around your head resulting in pain. These pain-sensitive features include things like the blood vessels, skin, and muscles in the head and neck, the sinus and dental structures in the mouth, and the many large arteries and cranial nerves that run through your head.
Migraine headaches are a common neurological disease resulting in a large variety of symptoms ranging from pain in the head to nausea to temporary loss of vision. The pain can appear as a throbbing, constant, sharp, or dull pressure. It also varies in severity, location, and how often it occurs from person to person. Headaches are the most complained about health issue world-wide.
What Causes Migraine Headaches?
At Connected Chiropractic, we understand that the causes of migraine headaches stem from the “3 Ts.”
- Trauma – Physical Stress
- Toxins – Chemical Stress
- Thoughts – Emotional Stress
Migraine headaches can be triggered by lifestyle choices and daily situations as well as misalignment in the spine.
Some of the most common contributors outside of spinal issues include:
- Alcohol consumption (red wine is the worst)
- Processed meats that contain nitrates
- Nicotine consumption
- Lack of sleep
- Poor posture
- Intense exercise
- Irregular eating habits
- Stress and emotionally straining situations
Treating Migraine Headaches with Chiropractic Care
More and more studies are showing that chiropractic adjustments have a profound impact on the improvement of headaches and their symptoms. Check out all the articles on the subject at chiro.org!
The one that I am going to highlight here is the February 2001 report from the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research1. The study took place at the Duke University Evidence-based Practice Center. It found that chiropractic patients experienced improvement in the frequency and severity of their headaches! It also showed that they continued to experience these benefits even when their care program was interrupted.
The most interesting part was when researchers compared chiropractic patients to patients taking amitriptyline, a common headache drug. Both had a similar immediate effect. However, patients who took the drug experienced adverse effects 82% of the time. Even more interesting, the patients who received adjustments showed more improvement than those who had taken the medication!
If you are suffering from migraine headaches, Connected Chiropractic’s Board-Certified Chiropractor has successfully reduced the severity and frequency of migraine headaches for many of our patients. This study, many others, and our own personal experiences show that chiropractic care allows the body to function better. It allows true healing to take place and addresses the root of the problem. Drugs, on the other hand, tend to simply cover up the symptoms of the problem without really correcting anything.
Other forms of treatment our Chiropractor uses to combat migraine headaches:
Massage Therapy: Connected Chiropractic’s massage therapy provides effective relief for migraine headaches. Massage can help reduce the tension both caused by and intensifying symptoms of headaches. By relaxing the muscles in the face, head, and neck, headaches can disappear. When paired with chiropractic adjustments, they can stay gone.
Interferential Current Therapy: Interferential current therapy works by sending stimulation to the branches of the major nerve that runs through the forehead. It can also help relax over-used blood vessels and tension in the muscles in and around the head.
Connected Chiropractic’s goal is to help people avoid using drugs and to encourage TRUE healing. Our doctor and staff want to target the cause of your migraine headaches, not just cover up the symptoms. We will tailor your care plan to match your individual needs to help rid you of headaches and to keep them from coming back. Schedule with us today and begin your TRUE healing now!
